About Us

In 2003, our managing director, Steve Burrows, started Blockade Services which operated from a small yard near Gatwick Airport. 

Steve had been in the construction and landscaping industry for many years previous to this and decided to start Blockade Services with only one grab lorry which supplied aggregates, landscaping materials and removed building waste from small sites across the South East.

Steve quickly grew the business and increased the number of lorries servicing the construction and landscaping industries. He quickly realised that there was a shortage of quality building and landscaping products available on the market. So in 2007, Blockade opened its first soil production facility close to Gatwick Airport where we manufacture a small range of soils and recycled aggregates to supply to the market. 

The company grew from strength to strength and in 2009, we opened a second yard in Godstone, Surrey, which served as our head office, vehicle maintenance yard and a redundant clay quarry where we then doubled our aggregate production, producing recycled type 1, type 2, shingles and crushed concrete.

Steve then started Chargrace Soils, named after the second generation children of the family. The company was formed to produce and supply premium blended soils and subsoils to the landscaping industry. 

We at Chargrace teamed up with two major quarries in the area which gave us the constant supply of single sourced primary feedstock for our different blends. We also enlisted Blockade to carry out the excavation of the feedstock in both quarries which then gave us the ingredients required for our products. 

Chargrace then opened a new blending and bagging facility in Westerham, Kent. This facility has now grown into the group’s main hub where we blend all of our products ready for distribution. We have also invested in bulk bagging machinery so that we can now supply all products bagged or loose to our clients. Around 90% of our deliveries are carried out using our fleet of lorries ranging from 3.5 tonne tippers up to 44 tonne artics.

This is our journey so far but there are plans to extend our services and product portfolio even more in the coming months.
